It was a Golden oportunity for ten of our club members to get a real taste of what it is like to experience a Championship competition at the Olympic stadium over the weekend. Six of the clubs students were competing for their respective Universities at the annual British Universities & Colleges outdoor Championships, whilst four more members were on officials duty as part of the London Prepares programme. Tom Watkins was first to take up the challenge, representing Cambridge in the 3000m steeple chase, he never looked fazed by the occasion, he ran the best time of his life 9mins 47.1 to finish 8th in his semi final and qualify for Mondays final. Abbie Rudd responded in fantastic fashion to a late call to the Women’s 400m, already down to represent Exeter in the 400m relay Abbie did herself and her army of supporters proud in both events. She rose to the occasion to clock a personal best time of 62.65 to finish 6th in her heat, then later ran a storming leg of the 4x 400m relay team, gaining two places in the process. Alex Muir himself could not have imagined he was about to slice a staggering 32 seconds off his PB time for 5000m ( that’s over 2 seconds per lap quicker !!), Alex finished 9th representing Oxford. Daniel Tuttle is back enjoying the 800m after recent shin trouble, he ran a season’s best 2min 02.1 to finish 5th in his heat, The Bucks New student was the youngest of the 72 800m runners and is already looking forward to next year. In all the events competion was strong, Helen Broadbrigde threw 41m 33 in the Hammer for Cambridge to finish 14th, While Jemma Colbourne represented Brighton in the 100m hurdles where she finished 5th in a time of 16.84. Alex Craninx, Charles Fowler, Paul Trincas and Ray Herbert were all trying out their duties as part of the London prepares, all four have been chosen to be on official duty at the Olympics, everything look very smooth from where I was watching, well done everyone !

Sam Hall kept up his fine form to take the Hurstbourne 5 title winning the very hilly multi-terrain 5 mile race by 59 seconds in a time of 30mins 28 seconds, and shaving five seconds off the course record in the process. Jess Franklin thoroughly enjoyed the hills and was crowned Queen of the hill on her way to taking the leading Women’s title, finishing in 10th place overall in a time of 34mins 28 seconds.
Susie Bush is taking the opportunity to take in some races while she is back in the USA, and it did not take long for Susie to get back to winning ways. Taking part in the Anthem 5km Fitness Classic held in Louisville, Kentucky, Susie was the first Woman home in a very impressive time of 17mins,10 secs.
Well done Susie, and we wish you well in your forthcoming races.
The Berkshire cross country team enjoyed their best ever showing at the UK Inter Counties Championships held at Cofton Park on Saturday. The County came away with three Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal to set the record.
Ten Newbury A.C members represented the Berkshire squad at this seasons championship. Alex Muir surpassed his last seasons result to finish 86th in the Senior Men’s race, together with Tom Watkins in 121st and Peter Crisp making his County debut in 222nd, the team finished 12th and were rewarded with the most improved County award. Jess Franklin goes from strength to strength as she improved 69 places on last years performance to come 96th in the Senior Women’s race. Sophie Crumly competed for the County for her 10th consecutive year, she finished 149th, Sue Van Huyssteen was delighted to make the top 200, finishing 199th and it was great to see both Chloe Coxhead 205th, and Bev Hall 221st back running for the County. With five of the seven runners coming from Newbury A.C, it was very rewarding to see the team come a very respectible 20th. Sophie Fowler was the leading Berkshire runner in the under 20 Women’s race as she finished 114th, and Charlotte Fowler in 126th place was the second best placed Berkshire athlete.
Thank you all very much for representing the Berkshire team.

Newbury A.C successfully defended both of the Senior titles in the Oxford Mail Cross Country League, with the Men’s team setting another club record score down from 134 points to just 77. It was also our first win in the Senior Men’s race as good pals Alex Muir and Tom Watkins crossed the line in unison to win by a good margin. Individually the Women had an amazing season with no fewer than eight Women coming away with an individual medal. Our club leader Sarah Fowler won Gold in the veteran 3 age group where she was unbeaten all season, Sarah is also the first athlete to run 30 races in the Oxford Mail having not missed one since the club joined the league in 2006. Sue Van Huyssteen was also crowned champion in the Veteran 2 age group. There were well earned Silver medals for Sophie Fowler in the Under 20′s, and Sophie Crumly in the Senior Women. Under 17 Victoria Duncan has really taken to running cross country as she won the Bronze in her first full season, Charlotte Fowler picked up her first individual award with a Bronze in the under 20′s. Jess Franklin was one of a handful of athletes who ran every race the club entered in to this season, this time she was rewarded with the Bronze in the Senior Women’s, and Bev Hall rounded off another fine season with a Bronze in the Veteran 2 age group. Special thanks go to our superb team of officials who braved the worst conditions of the season, Karen Yewer, Bev Hall, Brian Ireland, Dave Mason, Tony Mason and Charles Fowler. Thank you everyone who ran for our club on the Country this season, you really have been fantastic ! – Andy Tuttle
Twelve Newbury A.C members enjoyed the glorious sunshine in London when competing at the English National cross country championships held on the notorious Parliament Hill fields, Hampstead Heath on Saturday. With just a few patches of mud still present it was only the hills left to slow the proceedings down a little. Alex Muir was first out on the course as he tackled the Junior Men’s race, he had a fine run to come home in 35th place. Newbury were just one short to make a Senior Women’s team but with all three Women taking part for the first time at the championships there are encouraging signs we will be able to field a full team next year. The ever present Jess Franklin delivered another good run to finish in 80th place, Becky Coxhead has also done every cross country this season and ran well in 428th, and Emma Carter found the event good preparation for longer races to come, she finished 643rd.
The clubs Senior Men continued their superb season, they closed a team in 49th place out of 125 and ahead of any other club in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon region. They were Mark Vardy 351st, James Craggs 364th, Peter Crisp 531st, Sam Hall 665th, Dave Wright 723rd, Andy Tuttle 834th, Dean Makar 890th and Chris Hobson 980th, out of over 1600 finishers.

The Senior Women’s team have opened up a massive 195 point lead at the top of the Oxford Mail cross country league following some superb results in the penultimate fixture at a snowy Cirencester Park. Jess Franklin delivered her best league performance to date finishing runner up and coming within 11 seconds of the winning athlete. Sophie Fowler was one of several athletes that were competing in their 3rd cross country race in five days but she showed no signs of tiring as she not only earned 12th place in the Senior race but also 2nd in the under 20 age group, with sister Charlotte 3rd under 20, both now occupy medal placings in the league.
Chloe Coxhead produced her best run in recent years in 16th place to close the A team, Bev Hall was one place behind claiming 2nd place in the vet 45 age group in the process. Sarah Fowler made it four wins out of four as she pushed on to an unassailable lead in the vet 55 age group, while Sue Van Huyssteen hot off her 50 mile race the day before moved one step closer to sealing the veteran 45 age group crown with her 20th place finish. On the day our Senior Men came up against a very strong host club who packed all their 7 A team athletes in to record only 99 points, we did well to see our second best score of the season with 157 points. Thank you to all the athletes that made the trip despite the weather, it was very rewarding to see we still managed to get the required 14 Senior Men out to keep the B team flying high in division 2.

The 4th Oxford mail league fixture will now go ahead at Cirencester Park as originally planned, not back at Ascott-Under-Wychwood.
Please visit the Oxford Mail League website for all the details, please pass on the message to any club members. ( both courses have a little slope at the finish, I do not think it will make much difference !)
Also can I put out a call for the Senior Men’s shield, I have been asked if I could bring the shields to Cirencester so they will be ready to hand out at the final fixture in March.
Thank you all again for being so supportive of the cross country fixtures, you have been brilliant.
Andy
