Newbury made a dream start to this Olympic year 2012 by winning five Gold medals at the Berkshire Championships held at Newbury Showground. The Senior/ Veteran Men were out in force for the first race of the day and no other club could match them for some superb teamwork, the scoring six all finished in the top Fifteen runners to win the team title for the second year running. The Veteran Men continued their enviable record in this event, this time coming out clear winners with the lowest score possible, Steve Barnes won his first Berkshire Veteran’s title, Wayne Lillis was second, Chris Pudney 3rd and Dave Wright 4th.
Sophie Crumly kept up her amazing record of having never been beaten in a County Championship since becoming a Senior three seasons ago. With Sophie claiming the title it gave the team such a good start and with Jess Franklin running well to earn a Bronze medal, Sue Van Huyssteen and Bev Hall closed the scoring team in the runner up spot. Sue and Bev proved invaluable, as when they were joined by Sarah Fowler and Rose Metalli they ensured Newbury’s 5th title of the day in the Veteran Women’s. Sophie Fowler is accumulating a rather impressive medal collection as she earned the Bronze medal in the under 20 age group.

Two Newbury Athletic Club members were awarded the honour of a Blue after competing in opposing teams at the Oxford V Cambridge varsity cross country match held on Wimbledon Common recently. Good friends Tom Watkins and Alex Muir were both highly delighted to gain selection for the 121st running of this prestigious event. Alex Muir can also be proud of his finishing position coming 11th and the 5th scorer for Oxford. The score between the two Universities could not be closer, Oxford 61, Cambridge 60 .

Sophie Crumly finished 2011 as she started it by winning the Senior Women’s race in the Oxford Mail cross country league, this time in the recent fixture at Culham, near Abingdon. The reigning Berks, Bucks & Oxon champion and Berkshire County champion was in sparkling form choosing the first hill on the course to pull away from the field, maintaining a good lead all the way to the finish. Jess Franklin was also in the mix with the leading pack and was delighted with her league best position of 4th place, and Sue Van Huyssteen produced a very strong run in 16th place to win the veteran 2 age group and to close the Senior A team that now have a 46 point lead at the top of the league. Sarah Fowler recorded her second win of the season in the veteran 3 age group, while her twin daughters Sophie and Charlotte claimed 3rd and 4th spots respectively in the under 20 age group. Newbury’s Men closed the gap on league leaders Cirencester to just one point thanks to some fine packing, just three seconds separated Nick Jones in 23rd and Mark Vardy in 24th, the first two home for the club. Ed Fry maintained a good pace throughout to finish 4th in the under 11 Boys, and all three of the clubs under 17 Women made top ten finishes with Victoria Duncan 5th, Samantha Van Huyssteen 7th and Katie Metalli 9th.
Well done to all those that ran their first cross country for the club, Oscar Reeves, Ellie Williams, Hannah Wolak and Lucy Hartley.

Sophie, who had claimed the runner up spot at last years event, was in determined mood to go one better this time around. After tucking in behind the leaders for the first 2km, Sophie gradually stretched out a twenty second winning margin. The Senior Men produced their best team result for over a decade by pipping Reading A.C to the Bronze team medals by one point.

DAY 1 Saturday
Sue Van Huyssteen leads the way in the British Master over 45 Heptathlon at Oxford City with 2128 points at the halfway stage.
Having never raced over the hurdles in a competition before Sue started the day well, running 16.10 secs for the 80m distance, earning 533 points. Sue began the High Jump well clearing her first three heights at the first attempt, unfortunately she clipped the bar with her heals at 1.27, then followed with a slip on take off, but 1.24 still earned 555points. The rain came again as the Shot Putt started. 6.42m was Sue’s opening throw and proved to be her best, for another 377points. The wind which is so often present at Oxford did hamper the 200m times, but it proved to be the most fruitful event for Sue, her time of 30.72 secs gave her an additional 663 points.
DAY 2 Sunday
Despite a few hick ups in the run up during the long jump warm up Sue opened with a jump of 3m88. With only three jumps on offer Sue was determined to better that in the second round, and running with extra speed she leaped to 4m.02, this gave her 487 points. It is almost a tradition in this Country to dread the Javelin and with the wind blowing strongly across the field Sue did a magnificent job of blanking everything out to open with a superb 20.29m, a new personal best distance and adding another 388 points to the total.
Another famous old saying is ” save the best till last “, well Sue stormed off in the 800m, opening with a 35 second 200m, nicely tucked in behind the leader ( in the 40 – 45 age group ), and as she came to the bell she was given a halfway time of 74 seconds, still six seconds inside her target time and the wind was still blowing strongly. Sue just dug in and went with every surge the leader made, only missing the win by a whisker, but recording an outstanding 9 seconds personal best time of 2min32.7. this also earned an impressive 832 points to give a total of 3835 points. Sue was rewarded with a very stylish British Masters Gold medal.

Just four days after setting a new under 23 club record of 4 min 23.88 secs for the 1500m in Manchester, Sophie Crumly produced another record breaking run in the 3000m open graded meeting at Watford on Wednesday night. Despite the start being delayed until 10.30 due to the popularity of the meeting Sophie managed to lower her personal best time by over 2 seconds per lap to record a time of 9min 29.07. The records have stood since Jackie Cooper set them in 1985 & 1986 respectively, Sophie is currently ranked in the top 25 in the UK for both events.
Sophie Crumly finished just two tenths of a second shy of breaking the 4 min 30 barrier for the 1500m when competing for Loughborough University at the Loughborough International meeting on Sunday 22nd May. The extremely windy conditions were not conducive to running fast times as the athletes made a cautious start, but Sophie was not going to allow the pushing and shoving distract her from her goal, as she knuckled in to record a new personal best time of 4min 30.1.
