Newbury AC fielded a small team at Woking on Sunday but as always, despite quantity in numbers, delivered quality.
The undoubted star of the team was Under 13 Ella Houston winning all three of her events by considerable margins. She started with the Long Jump producing a Grade 1 leap of 4.46m, followed with a grade 3 200m of 29.1s and finally improved her own club record in the high jump by 15cm whilst clearing 1.55m – A grade 1 jump which (albeit early in the season) ranks her 2nd in the country at this age group. Cherie McBarnett stepped up to this age group with fine performances in 100m (3A), 200m (2b) & LJ (4b).
Not to be outdone U15 Michaela Whitton had an excellent afternoon confirming her early season promise with an 80cm pb in the Shot as she scored a Grade 2 9.63m and a Grade 3 pb in the Discus with 23.69m whilst finishing 2A in both events.
Under 17 Sam Van Huyssteen had a pb in the Shot with a Grade 4 8.17m. U15’s Rosie Stanton and Alice MacAulay found the going a little tough as they moved up an age-group but will undoubtedly improve as the season progresses as will U17 Sally Herbert.
The only U13 boy to compete was Connor Humphreys who finished in fourth place in the A string in the 200m and followed this up with a second in the javelin by adding over a metre on his best and a win in the A string shot with a throw of 4.33m.
In the under 17s, two of the three boys stepped up an age group and against some tough competition they proved themselves with Will Tyson and Phillip Carter starting them off in the 1500m finishing in 5A and 2B respectively. Phillip took third place in the High Jump on count back in an exciting competition where the league record was also broken and then went straight across to the 100m to finish in fifth place equalling his best in both events. Harry Russell also took to the track to compete in the A string 200m and 400m.
Newbury only had 2 entries in the Under 11 Quadkids event but both had excellent days which they thoroughly enjoyed. Lorcan Friel, competing in his first ever competition, finished 8th overall on the day and Tom Houston won the long jump competition with a jump of 3.64m and finished the day in 2nd place overall out of twenty one athletes.
Full results should be available on the Wessex League site soon
Newbury AC throws squad youngsters have been in action over the last couple of weekends and once again put in some first class performances at three different locations across the south of England.
Saturday 31st March saw Derek Philbey compete at Radley, where he took first place in the U20 men’s Discus with a new personal best of 37m42. He also won the shot with another PB of 13m07, only to beat his best once again the next day in Bournemouth with13m27 – comfortably above the English Schools qualifying mark.
Jamie Kuehnel and Michaela Whitton competed at Bracknell on 31st March, with Jamie winning the hammer and Michaela coming second in the discus beating her PB by three meters with 23m62, and also coming second in the shot.
On 1st April at the Bournemouth open, the Newbury lads dominated the U20s men discus and taking all three medals. Ricky Doran came out on top, with brother Lee close behind in second and Derek Philbey 3rd. Ricky also came second in the hammer with Lee in third.
In the under 15 Hammer Jamie Kuehnel once again excelled, winning with 50m23 – reinforcing his position as UK number 1 for 2012. Jamie also won the discus with a new personal best of 34m21. In the under 15 girls, Michaela Whitton again got two second places in the discus and shot – the shot with a new pb of 8m83. There was also a new personal best for Kayleigh Partleton in the U20 women’s Discus, taking her beyond 25 metres. Micahela was out again at the Basingstoke meeting on 7th April securing 2nd place in the discus and 3rd in the shot.
Meanwhile this year’s British Masters Indoor Championships at Lea Valley on 17th & 18th March, brought a best-ever medal haul for veteran thrower Bob Broadbridge. Bob competed in all five throwing events, and came home with five medals – two golds and three silvers.
The gold medals came in the discus and the shot, with silvers in each of the javelin, hammer and heavy hammer events. All five events were closely fought, but none more so than the shot. Going into the final round Broadbridge held a narrow lead, with three other athletes less than half a metre behind. With his final effort he extended his lead with a throw of 13m36, and then could only watch as his rivals had their final throws. With the last throw of the competition, Tony Tipping of Cambridge Harriers threw exactly the same distance of 13m36 for a very unusual ‘dead heat’.
With the best throws being equal, the result was decided by the competitors second best throw, and so the gold medal went to Broadbridge by the narrowest of margins.

Many of you will know Helen Butt who trained with Keith for many years as a sprinter before going to Bristol University in 2010. Here is a note she sent Keith the other day (as someone who’s never seen the attraction of sprinting alone it’s nice to see she’s seen the light as well!!):
How is everything at the club? I thought I’d contact you seeing as I’ve entered the Ollie Johnson memorial run, you’re probably wondering if I’ve lost my mind. I’ve been meaning to enter for a long time and it’s definitely about time I took part, considering its for a very good cause.
I’m actually running the Bristol 10k on the 20th of May because I’m raising money for a charity that’s going to send me to Uganda this summer to do construction work and teaching in a small village in eastern Uganda. I signed up with the charity this term through University and I’m going to Uganda for 7 weeks in June, July and August, we’re going to be building fuel efficient stoves and a water tanks for the village and teaching the children about health and sanitation. It should be a great experience, and a once in a lifetime opportunity. We each have to raise £750 though which is quite a challenge! That’s why I’m running the 10k and asking people to sponsor me. The Ollie Johnson run is the weekend after so seeing as I’ll be trained-up already I thought it would be a good time to do it.
Otherwise, uni is going well, completely swamped with work at the moment though so athletics has taken a bit of a back seat unfortunately, apart from training for the 10k.
I don’t want to sound cheeky or anything but I’ve actually got a fundraising page for the Uganda project, I wondered if you could send it round a few people from the club who might be interested in helping me reach my target, any amount of donation would be so helpful and I need all the help I can get. 18 club members turned out this Saturday, despite the rain, to run in the Newbury parkrun. Sam Hall achieved his first win in a time of 17:28. Other runners were as follows: 18th Ellis Inglut 20:36; 28th Phillip Carter 21:41; 30th Adam Shaw 21:47; 42nd Chloe Coxhead 22:45; 47th Ellie Williams 23:15; 61st Hannah Wolak 24:43; 69th Catherine Tuttle 25:26; 70th Christopher Worth 25:33; 72nd Wendy Dallimore 25:41; 75th Karen Matthew 26:02; 83rd Des Fielding 26:24; 87th Liz Harkness 26:37; 90th Becky Coxhead 26:48; 104th Tony Hayes 27:39; 127th Liana Hamilton-King 29:56; 149th Emma Carter 31:54. Dave Wright accompanied youngest son Toby.
Alan Money took 2nd place from a field of 450 at Exbury Gardens 10K in the New Forrest on Sunday.
At the 5km mark, the course left the road onto the 1km foreshore path which was a mix of shingle and sand (wash over from the beach) and by this stage Alan had created an increasing gap in 1st place, but an error with the route signs meant he went the wrong way running up hill towards the light house.
Dropping to 3rd place and having to play catch up, the next 500 meters were over the rest of energy zapping shingle path, then back onto the road running uphill for the next 3km’s. Catching the 2nd place runner at 7km’s, Alan then moved to joint 1st place at the 8km stage. Coming into the 9th km, it was neck and neck but unfortunately giving his all to get back in the lead, Alan lost on the sprint finish on the hill pipped to the line by 3 seconds in a time of 35.03. The error at the 5km mark meant that both first place and the course record were lost over what proved to be a very challenging course, especially the ‘beach run’, but a race through country lanes, along the beach front and through Exbury gardens made for a an enjoyable morning out.
In recognition of the fact that there are very few competitions available for under 9 and under 11 athletes and with many of them being new to athletics Oxford City Athletic Club are running a small quadkids event on Sunday 1st April (9:30 – 12:00). Entries must be made in advance: OCAC quadkids details

Newbury’s annual throws meeting took place in perfect spring weather at the Crookham Common track on Sunday. The event is one of the very best throws meetings in the country, and this year attracted 160 throwers from across the south of England.
There were many outstanding performances, but none better than Newbury AC’s own Jamie Kuehnel who added 8 metres to his personal best, throwing 53m42 in the Under 15 Hammer. Jamie added another pb in the Discus going beyond 33m for the first time. Under 13 Jack Hall threw a PB in the discus with a distance of 19.02m.
Newbury’s Under 20 men also delivered some great performances. In the Hammer Ricky Doran went beyond 50 metres for the first time, and brother Lee was close to his best with 47m97. Derek Philbey threw personal bests of 12m97 in the Shot and 36m86 in the Discus. Also in the Discus Ricky Doran threw beyond 40 metres for the first time, with Lee Doran close to his 38 metre best.
Veteran Bob Broadbridge threw 46m31 in the Hammer, won the Men’s Shot with 12m72, and came second in the Men’s Discus with 44m11 – a throw which beat his best performance from last season.
The Newbury ladies also had a successful day. Under 20 Kayleigh Partleton set a new personal best in the Shot with 8m59. In the Under 15s there were pbs for Michaela Whitton in the Discus and the Shot with with 20m60 and 8m51 respectively, and in the Javelin Rosie Stanton threw a pb of 19m61. In the Senior ladies Emma Carter threw close to her best in Shot, Hammer and Discus.
Ian Hopkins once again led the organisation of the meeting – supported by many volunteers and officials. The events began at 9am with the last event finishing under floodlights, continuing without a pause or a hitch. A terrific effort by everyone involved!
