Sam’s win in the 400m Hurdles by taking the B string, Bob Broadbridge finished 2nd in the shot A, with Jamie Kuehnel winning the B string, Helen Broadbridge throwing 52m.85 for 2nd in the Hammer, with Under 17 Charlotte Payne sealing the B string win with 51m94, and Daniel Tuttle 6cm clear of his rivals in the High Jump with 1m76. Jamie Kuehnel and Ian Payne took maximum points in the Hammer, while Jamie and Bob Broadbridge were just 1 point adrift of that feat in the Discus. Mother and Daughter paring of Jenny and Trinity O’Connor came tantalizingly close to recording double victories in both the High Jump and the Pole Vault, with under 17 Trinity’s Vault of 2m70 winning the A string, Jenny cleared 2m10 to win the B, Trinity finished 2nd in the High Jump on count back, while Jenny won the B string on count back. Report from Emma Guilfoyle:
The second of the club’s Wessex League fixtures was full of personal bests for the youngest of the junior section. The boys kicked off with the vortex throw with a great start for Oliver Taylor with 21.25m, the girls started with the long jump with personal bests for Zoe Gray and Lola Thorne. The 75m also had personal bests for both Oliver and Freddie Wilson with both also improving on their long jump by huge margins and Oliver also improving on his 600m. The girls team saw Anna Delavere and Sophie Livingstone competing for the first time in the league and personal bests in 2 events for Clementine Barry, 3 events for Thea Osbourne and all 4 events for Zoe Gray and Lola Thorne. Overall the U11s finished in 6th place.
On a beautiful sunny day, Newbury AC’s senior team made the short trip to their (almost) home fixture at Andover. On paper the team looked strong, but even in the most optimistic minds nobody was quite expecting what was to come. The home team dominated the day, finishing with their highest ever division 2 score of 242 points – a total which has only been beaten twice in the last four seasons, both times by the eventual league champions. Newbury finished the day streets ahead of the competition – early season league leaders Yeovil Olympiads (177 points), and London clubs Hillingdon AC (173) and Herne Hill Harriers (105).
The day’s biggest successes came in the throws, but this time the ladies team marginally outshone the men’s team. Helen Broadbridge and Charlotte Payne were an unbeatable force, taking the double victory in all three heavy throws. For both, the highlight of the day was the hammer, where Helen added another half a metre to her own club record, throwing 53.67m, while Charlotte wasn’t far behind with 52.27m – a remarkable achievement given she was throwing two weights above her own category, and becoming the seventh furthest U17 athlete of all time. To complete the rout, Rosie Stanton (A) and Abigail Livingstone (B) added a second and first place respectively in the javelin to secure 31 out of a possible 32 points.
On the men’s side, Jamie Kuehnel and Oliver Hewitt were consistently scoring big points, taking four wins and three second places over the day between them. Once again, the hammer proved a double victory, while Oliver’s huge PB of 39.01m in the discus not only won the A string, but took him within a metre of his coach’s club record.
We are still looking for more volunteers to marshal at the Bayer Newbury 10 K on the morning of Sunday 28th May, if you think you may be able to help please can you email Ryan Hill at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Many thanks in advance!
