Oxfordshire Cross Country League Round 3 – Horspath, Oxford – 6th January

Message from Phil Marshall

A reminder to everyone that the next Oxfordshire Cross Country League fixture is this Sunday 6th January at Horspath, Oxford.  It would be fantastic if we can have another big Newbury AC turnout. 🎽🇨🇷

Fixture details, times, directions and course maps can be found on the Oxon XC league website

Note on the course from Barry Cornelius: “The course routes are different from those of past OXL fixtures held at this venue.”

Two main differences are:

  1. The routes don’t climb as high as previous events.
  2. The very muddy section between I and J (see course maps) is in use for the U15 and above races.

Presentation evening 2018

As with previous years the main feature of the event was the presentation of awards for outstanding performances during the 2018 Track & Field season and to the winners of the Club Road Leagues.

Report from Phil Marshall:

A big thank you and well done to everyone that raced the second Oxfordshire Cross Country League fixture in Cirencester today. That hill is brutal!

Jess Franklin was the star of the day, destroying the senior women’s field with an outstanding display of front running and winning by a huge distance (over 70 seconds!). Victoria Duncan also had a great race finishing in 4th.

Our senior men had a much smaller turn out than in the first round but still had some good performances with James Craggs in 8th and Matthew Green in 9th.

Well done also to our juniors, Tobias Allen with the best performance finishing 5th in U15/17 race.

Club XC Championship tables – after 3 events

Keith Scott Boxing Day Handicap

Entries are now open for the Keith Scott Boxing Day Handicap. The race is held over a 1.7 mile multi-terrain course. Slowest runners start first and if the handicapper get it right (doesn’t happen often!) there should be a mass of runners coming down the finishing straight together.

Entries are free and the event is open to all club members, their family & friends. Please let Irwin Fairclough know by 22nd December if you plan to run. No entries on the day.

We also need 8-10 helpers on the day to ensure that the race runs smoothly and safely. Please let Irwin know if you can assist in any way. We’re usually finished by 11am.

Updates

Josie receiving her silver medal

Josie Robertson produced another excellent performance yesterday at Milton Keynes to finish 2nd in the U13 Girls race in Round 2 of the British Athletics Cross-challenge series. Josie was just 5 seconds behind the winner Scarlett Livingstone from Exeter, the pair now share the lead in the Under 13 age group.

The Age-Graded Road League table has been updated to include results to end-October. Current title holder Mike Sheridan has moved ahead of Josie Robertson at the top of the table… still two months to go though!  Please e-mail Irwin Fairclough with any additions / corrections.

Berkshire County Cross-country Championships, 16th December, St Andrew’s School, Pangbourne. Please note that athletes wishing to compete need to submit their entry by 12th December.

Newbury AC SPOTY: call for nominations

This year’s end of season presentation evening will see the first ever Newbury AC Sports Personality of the Year Award!

We’re looking for your nominations to make a shortlist of contenders, with a live public vote on the evening to decide the winner. As with the BBC award, we’re looking for someone who’s been inspirational, motivational or just damn impressive in what they do – whether in track, field, cross country, road running or everyday club life. Any club member is eligible – old, young, fast or slow.

This idea will only work with input from you guys, so please email your nominations to Mike Robbins  or E-J Bailey before 21st November, with a brief description of why you think they deserve the award. There’s no limit to the number of nominations (but don’t vote for yourself, nobody likes a show-off).
