The Club was were out in force last weekend for the Berkshire Cross Country Championships and excelled battling the hills, mud and rain at Prospect Park in Reading. The club picked up 5 individual medals and 4 team medals, with 7 athletes earning invitations to represent the county later in the season in the National Inter-County Championships.
The Senior Women of Yaz Ryder, Victoria Duncan, Emily Craggs and Mariama Barrie became Team County Champions and the Veteran Women in the same race equalled their gold medal success and in doing so collected all 3 individual medals. Jess Franklin (3rd overall), Mireille Cook and E-J Bailey picked up gold, silver and bronze and Rachel Allen in 4th made up the perfect scoring team.
The Senior Men matched the girls double gold success with 10 finishers in the top 32 positions. In a highly competitive race won by Birchfield Harriers Alex Tovey, Newbury’s winning team of six were Alex Muir, Matt Green, Mike Robbins, Anthony Sudlow, Ben Wickens and Mike Wheeler; and the Veteran Men’s took silver with Phil Marshall, Steve Elsmere, Steve Barnes and Jeff Bird.
Further medal success came from Izzy Fry in the Junior Women’s race and Josie Robertson in the U13 girls race, both with fantastic committed performances to finish in second position, claiming the silver medals and earning their places in the Berkshire county squad.
