Youth Nations Cup – 3rd August 2019
Reaching the end of an extremely busy and exciting 2019 season competing Internationally for Great Britain in hammer, Charlotte Payne was selected to represent England at the first ever Youth Nations Cup in Dublin, Ireland.
Charlotte was finally able to compete in the U18 category after a season of competing in the age group above – U20. Charlotte led from the first round and smashed her own personal best several times throughout the competition. She ended her competition with a huge last round throw of 67.99m!
This throw broke the U18 British Record which was previously set by Sophie Hitchon in 2008. Hitchon went on to claim Bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the Hammer.
Charlotte’s win and British record helped lead her teamates to victory and England won overall.
It is important to England Athletics to have successful individual performances at the Youth Nations Cup to recognise their importance in the development of senior international athletes towards success at the Senior Commonwealth Games.
This was Payne’s last competition of the year before she starts her winter training in preparation for 2020. She faces the possibility of representing Great Britain again – this time at the World Championships in Nairobi.
