Newbury AC had 4 athletes competing in the National U20/U23 Championships at Bedford at the weekend.
Charlotte Payne, fresh from her GB debut, competed in the U20 Women’s Hammer on Saturday. After a slow start to the competition Charlotte hit form with a 59.99m effort. This edged her into the lead with a European Qualifying distance, it wasn’t quite enough to win the competition, but secured her an impressive silver medal.
On Sunday, Charlotte entered the U23 competition against athletes almost 4 years older than her. As the youngest in the field, Charlotte faced some very tough competition, but threw a huge 61.81m, just 2cm off her Personal Best, and claimed a bronze medal with 3rd position.
Charlotte hopes her efforts this weekend will book her a spot on the Team GB team for the European Championships next month.
Oliver Hewitt, also competing in the hammer in the Men’s U23 competition finished in 5th place.
On the track Izzy Fry narrowly missed out on the Women’s U20 1500m final by less than half a second, finishing her semi final in 6th place. Izzy will now turn her attentions to the 5000m where she has already secured GB selection.
Callum O’Neill finished in 5th position in the Men’s U23 5000m in very warm conditions for distance running, finishing agonisingly close to a sub 15 minute time in 15:01.
