Three Newbury athletes were in action at the Iffley Road Mile Festival in Oxford on Saturday. Both Izzy Fry and Alex Muir attempted to follow in Sir Roger Bannister’s footsteps, and despite strong winds, Izzy managed to take 24 seconds off the U20 club record with a time of 4:59.01 – becoming the first female NAC athlete to run a sub 5 minute mile in over a decade. Alex battled hard in the men’s A race to 4:36.21, his best time since 2012. Mike Robbins stepped down from his usual distance for some speed work in the 600m, and was rewarded with a PB of 1:28.98.
Two junior athletes were selected to represent Berkshire in the Derek Crookes Southern U13 Intercounty match in Kingston. Josie Robertson raced hard to 3rd place in the 1500m A race with a time of 5:08.36, while Miriam Cooper added over 30cm to her PB in the javelin with a throw of 17.78m for 11th place in the B string.
And on Wednesday night, Maisie Jeger broke the U15 girls 300m club record in her first race since returning to Newbury AC first claim, with a time of 43.3s at the Cheltenham midsummer open meeting.
