Roc Newbury 10k 2020 – Volunteers required

Message from Ryan Hill – Race director 2020

Having taking over from Becky Elsmere, I am now beginning to make plans for next year’s Roc Newbury 10k race on 24th May 2020 (please keep your diaries free!!)
The race provides a huge benefit to the club and chosen charities and requires lots of volunteer support to stage successfully.
Getting involved in the race organisation in any way is a great experience, please get in touch if you’re available to help – I’m sure there will be a role suited to everyone.

In particular, since I have moved out of the Head Marshall role, this role remains open, and I would appreciate any offers for assistance here.
The role can be broken down into three tasks which could be undertaken by three people depending on interest – for all the roles, I will be able to offer support, and I have developed a spreadsheet to make the tasks much simpler:
Task 1: keep track of marshal volunteers (contact details, specific requests) and reply to queries leading up to the event from the dedicated email address. Queries are usually easy to deal with, but since we require ~60 marshals, in the couple of weeks leading up to the race there can be a few emails to deal with.
Task 2: assign marshals to positions on the course.  Happily, most marshals return year on year (thanks go to them!!) and will request to take the same positions, so allocating people to positions usually only involves fitting people around the vacant places.  The allocation process will need to be completed on the Saturday before the race to ensure the required paperwork (marshal instructions) is ready for the race morning.  The spreadsheet I have put together makes this easier to generate.
Task 3: Checking in marshals on the day, and handing out the instructions documents at the race HQ.  Marshal positions and individual marshal instructions for each position are provided and shown on course maps. This role involves ensuring the marshals are happy with the information they receive, know where their position is – and how to get there, and making sure we have contact information.  Nige Popplewell has performed this role for many years, so will be there to support you as well.
If you have any questions about any of the roles, please get in touch – – no experience is necessary (I had only marshalled the junior race once before I took on the role!)
