Report from Mike Robbins:
Three Newbury athletes competed at BUCS university championships in Bedford this weekend. Yaz Ryder (St Marys) finished strongly in a very competitive 1500m heat to take the last automatic qualifying spot for the semi-final. Helen Broadbridge (BPP) made two finals and set two season’s best marks in the discus and the hammer, finishing 5th overall in the latter. Harry Russell (Sheffield) narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the 800m, running a PB of 1:52.54 for fourth place in his semi-final, before anchoring his team’s 4x400m relay to 5th place with a stunning 47.8s leg.
Meanwhile, across the pond, Alex Hanson broke the 800m senior club record for the second time in as many months, winning the Southland Conference with an incredible 1:48.67.
