Weekend overview – 9th & 10th March

CAU Inter County Championships (Inc British Athletics Cross Challenge)

Newbury Athletic Club had 8 athletes representing Berkshire on Saturday in the British Athletics Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Prestwold House, Loughborough.
In very high calibre races in which only the best 7 juniors and 9 seniors from each county in the UK are entered into each race, Izzy Fry finished in 13th place and lead the Berkshire team home to a bronze medal in the U20 Women’s race. Josie Robertson matched Izzy’s performance in the U13 Girls race also finishing 13th and the first Berkshire athlete home. Lucy Wells was 70th in the U17 Women’s race and also picked up a bronze team medal in the 4 scoring Berkshire team.
Newbury’s other athletes were Luci Robertson in U15 Girls (151st), Tobias Allen in U17 Men (185th), Rachel Allen in Senior Women (199th) and Matthew Green (159th) & James Craggs (181st) in the Senior Men’s race, which was won by Adam Hickey of Essex.

Grizzly

7 runners competed in the Grizzly 20 mile race in Seaton, leading them home Stephen Elsmere finished in 30th position with a time of 2:40:04. Other finishers were David Wright (164th / 3:05:34), Tania Whitby, Rick WWyatt, Sue Van Huyysteen and Ady May (1054th to 1057th / 4:21:06) and Charlotte Winton (1134th / 4:26:53)

Louis Vinkloop 10km

Peter Crisp finished in 22nd position with a time 38:37 at the 10km event held in Amsterdam

Barcelona Marathon

Hannah Coxhead and Ian Coxhead completed the Barcelona marathon with times of 4:44:39 & 5:17:29.

British Masters Indoor and Winter Thriww Championships

Newbury Athletic Club had some great medal success in the British Masters Indoor and Winter Throws Championships at Lea Valley this weekend.
Indoors, Club President Simon Barrett, found himself in very tight finishes in all of the 60m, 200m and 400m sprints in the M65 age group, and ended up with a full set of medals – bronze, silver and gold respectively. In the M45 age group, Craig Beecham took two silvers – in the Long and Triple Jumps. In the Long Jump his 5m82 leap held the lead until the final round, when he was pipped by just a few centimetres.
Outdoors the throwers faced some difficult conditions, with winds of up to 50mph, and plenty of rain! Club Chairman, Bob Broadbridge, claimed gold in the M55 Hammer and finished 4th place in the Discus. Deborah Montgomery, who is second claim for Newbury AC and coached by Broadbridge, took advantage of some slightly depleted fields in the W50 category taking gold in the Shot, Discus and Javelin, as well as silver in the Hammer.
