Five Newbury AC athletes competed in the South of England Championships in Bedford this weekend. Oliver Hewitt was the only one of the five to make the podium, picking up a bronze medal in the U20 hammer with a season’s best throw of 62.08m. Helen Broadbridge doubled up, with a season’s best throw of 43.28m enough for 4th place in the discus, having also finished 5th in the hammer.
On track, Mark Vardy kept touch with the lead pack for well over half of his 5000m race, before narrowly missing out on both a PB and a place in the final with a 15:44 clocking. Mike Robbins and Yaz Ryder both faced tougher than expected heats in the 800m, each finishing 7th in 2:03.82 and 2:17.54 respectively.
At the Wargrave 10K on Sunday, Mike Sheridan finished 2nd in the M60+ age-group in 43:24 and Sheila Marshall was 4th F60 in 55:47.
