A busy weekend of racing on the roads and track for the club
Chieveley Chase – 11th May
The first round of the Run West Berkshire Series was held on Saturday. Leading the club home in the 5.7 mile multi terrain race was Barry Regan with a 2nd place finish, followed by Mike Wheeler (4th), Nigel Popplewell (11th / 3rd Vet), Richard Kennedy (16th), Rachel Allen (18th / 1st Female), Geoff Anderson (25th / 1st V60), Stephen Ferriday (29th), Christopher Culley (32nd / 2nd V60) and Julie Kaessar (71st)Full results can be found here.
The next round of the series in the Kintbury 5 on the 2nd June 2019.
Berkshire Athletics Championships – 12th May

Shinfield 10 km
Two club records were broken during Monday’s race, James Knight (4th / 1st M40) set a new 10km V45 club record of 33:41 and Liz Harkness (3rd F70) set a new 10km F70 club record of 56:19. Other finishers were James Craggs (34:23), Nigel Popplewell (40:21), Dave Wright (42:23), Laura Buchanan (44:59), Steve Ferriday (45:03) and Emily Craggs (45:27)
BUCS Championship – 5000 m
Izzy Fry lowered her Under 20 5000m record when competing in a high class field at the BUCS Championships held at Bedford. The race was won by Anna Moller from Denmark, with Jess Judd in 2nd place both going under 16mins. Izzy took 13 seconds off her previous best time to clock 16.50.52.
Hurstbourne 5 miles
Two club members completed the 5 mile trail race, Rachel Allen (39:25) and Philippa Cass (41:55)
Brighton marathon & 10km
Andy Ind completed the marathon in a time of 2:49:49, with a 5th place finish in the M40 age category.
Brian Matthews completed the 10 km in a time of 1:04:34
Emily Craggs completed the race in a time of 47:25
Peats Pits Fell Race
Dave Wright came 15th just behind the first M50, completing the just under 3 miles course in 20 minutes 4 seconds
Chedworth Roman Trail 10 mile
Geoff Anderson finished in 2nd place in the V60 category
English Schools Cross Country Championships
Emma Downie was Newbury AC’s only first claim athlete at the English Schools Cross Country in Leeds yesterday. She had a great race in windy, rainy and muddy conditions. Despite being eighth out of the Berkshire pen In the Senior Girls race, she finished 7th for the county in 173rd place overall.
Bath half marathon
James Knight ran a superb 1:12:46 for 36th place overall with Conor McGrory finishing in 1:22:47.
Reading half marathon
Andrew Ind was first club member home in 1:17:51, with great runs also coming from Mike Wheeler 1:22:51, Andy McKendrick 1:23:44, Max Read 1:23:51, Dan Reeves 1:26:05, Dan Taylor 1:30:11, Georgie Offer 1:38:37, Benjamin Bliss 1:40:44, Chris Culley 1:49:13, Ruth Lambert 1:54:21.
Matthew Green and Stephen Elsmere were official 1:20 and 1:25 pacers and they ran 1:19:29 and 1:24:42 respectively.
Fleet Half Marathon
Steve Barnes ran 1:19:12, Mike Sheridan 1:34:19 and Julie Kaesser 1:51:41.
English XC championship – Leeds
Andy Tuttle celebrated his 60th birthday with a 1512th place finish in his 34th consecutive national XC championship. Joining him in the senior men’s race were Dan Tuttle (465th) and Phil Marshall (539th). Izzy Fry finished 22nd in the Junior Women’s race. Sophie Byatt finished 161st in the U15G race. Ellis Russell finished 252nd in the U17M race. Catherine Tuttle finished 808th in the senior women’s race.

Scottish XC championship – Falkirk
Representing his university Alex Muir had a great performance with a 39th place finish of 719 runners.
