Young Athletes

Introductory and development programme

The club runs a well-organized introductory and development programme for Young Athletes. Our fully qualified and experienced coaches will introduce athletes aged 9–14 to sprinting, middle and long-distance running, jumping and throwing, and will provide a proper foundation of skills, knowledge and attitude to sport.

Our emphasis is on athletics for enjoyment and fitness, and our training sessions include fun competitions and games, as well as traditional training methods.

We welcome junior athletes and aim to help these young athletes achieve their goals, but to do this we need volunteers to assist us. For details of how to volunteer see this document.

The main junior session is held on a Thursday evening.

During the summer we train at Crookham Common Athletic Track (CCAT), in winter in the sports hall at St Bart’s school.

The time is subject to slight variations but is generally between 5.45 and 7pm.

Introductory leaflet and joining information can be downloaded here.

Junior Handbook can be downloaded here.

A document explaining the competitions can be found here.

The location of & directions to our main training sites can be downloaded here: NAC Training Locations.

Outdoor Sessions

Outdoor sessions cover all the main track and field events including sprints, middle distance, vortex throw, javelin, shot putt and discus as well as hurdles and long jump (and high jump weather permitting).

Indoor Sessions

Sportshall athletics, created in 1976 by George Bunner so that youngsters at his club could continue to train indoors on dark winter nights, became so popular that a format for competition soon developed and the first UK championships were staged in 1980.
Our indoor sessions cover the events held in the sportshall competitions including sprints, foam hurdles, indoor throws, standing long and triple jump as well as vertical jump, speed bounce and the hi-stepper. Newbury AC has all the equipment necessary to provide enjoyable training sessions in all events throughout the winter. We also alternate this with indoor circuit sessions for core strength over the winter.

Longer runs

There is also the chance of a run out for those who enjoy a longer run especially for the middle distance on the track and the cross country over the winter.

Competitions

Newbury Athletic Club is a competitive athletic club. We have a strong and positive reputation in local leagues and competitions, and actively participate as a team in the Wessex Young Athlete League during the summer and in the Oxford Mail Cross Country League during the winter. Athletics is also a team sport and we actively foster team spirit and strongly encourage all of our club members to take part and support the club in these events.
