The club runs a well-organized introductory and development programme for Young Athletes (age 9 – 14). The main session is held on a Thursday evening, in Winter this is in the Sportshall at St Bart’s school and in Summer outside at Brown’s Meadow playing fields on Fifth Road with some sessions being held at the track at Crookham Common (CCAT).
Young athletes are encouraged to represent the club in the Wessex Young Athletes league, the Oxford Mail cross-country league and in local and Regional Sportshall events.
Wessex League 2010
2010 saw a rise in numbers of athletes taking part in the 4 matches in the Wessex League, with 33 boys and 37 girls taking to the track and field with the U11s once again participating in the Quadkids event. This has proved highly successful again with our young athletes where they each take part in the 4 given events. Jack Holland proved highly successful in this finishing the season in 5th place in the vortex throw and 16th overall in the league standings with Jess Chitty finishing inside the top 10 in the 600m’s. The team did a great job in completing the season in 9/19 teams.
In the main league the juniors finished in overall equal 17th with Bournemouth Athletic Club with the under 17 girls mainly made up of Charlotte and Sophie Fowler, Kayleigh Partleton and Charlotte Hall doing the club proud by finishing in 6th for their age group. Highlights of the season has to go to Sam Plumb who topped the 100m hurdles in all four of the matches and also to Sophie and Charlotte Fowler for their wins in both the A and B strings in the 800m. Also to Alex Craninx who joined us last year and went straight in to equal and then break the club record for the High Jump with 1m95.
Indoor Sportshall 2010-11
We had a total of 18 junior athletes taking part in 3 Indoor Sportshall competitions over the winter between October and January. We had one for u11-u15s and then we had the county events. The u13/u15 in November and the u11s in January both saw some compete for the first time and others recording personal bests indoors.
The match in November saw Newbury athletes making up composite teams with other clubs which proved highly successful for us where we came away with bronze medals in the u13boys for Conrad Brashaw and Harry McDougall and a silver medal for Phillip Carter in the u15 boys.
Newbury also had individual wins for Fen Holland and Conrad Brashaw in the standing triple and long jump respectively which saw them being picked for the Berkshire team where they competed at Burgess Hill on Sunday.
