The club runs a well-organized introductory and development programme for Young Athletes (age 9 – 14). The main session takes place on Thursday evenings between 6pm and 7.15pm for 9-14yr olds (juniors to sign in from 5.50pm). In the summer it is held at at Brown’s Meadow, Fifth Road with one session a month held at CCAT (dates are listed on the main news page and in the newsletters). During the winter months, usually beginning of November to the middle of March, it is held inside St. Bart’s sportshall.
The outdoor sessions cover all the main track and field including sprints, middle distance, vortex throw, javelin, shot putt and discus as well as hurdles and long jump (high jump is covered at the CCAT sessions when we go up there weather permitted).
The indoor sessions cover the events held in the sportshall competitions including sprints, foam hurdles, indoor throws, standing long and triple jump as well as vertical jump, speed bounce and the hi-stepper. We also alternate this with indoor circuit sessions for core strength over the winter.
There is also the chance of a run out each week for those who enjoy a longer run especially for the middle distance on the track and the cross country over the winter.
We have also seen the introduction of log books for all our juniors which we encourage athletes to fill in each month in our time trials as well as their competitions. These are also collected in twice a year for us to look at progress throughout the year.
Young athletes are encouraged to represent the club in the Wessex Young Athletes league, the Oxford Mail cross-country league and in local and Regional Sportshall events.
